with just 3 days away from the iowa caucuses... presidential candidates are making their last swing through the state before the big night. good afternoon and thanks for joining us. i'm jodi whitworth. donald trump held to his promise by skipping last night's republican debate. but his presence was certainly felt there.... and at his own event, trump said he's not sure how it will play with iowa voters come caucus night nbc's peter alexander has more.... as fox put it, he was the "elephant not in the room"... "we love our vets!" ... donald trump -- boldly boycotting the fox news debate. "when you're treated badly, you have to stick up for your right. " defying critics who called his move a mistake... ...even inviting two underdog opponents to speak... ... trump compared the crowd and the number of cameras at his veterans fundraiser to the academy awards. later, touting six million dollars

gave his opponents an opening to deliver their best one-liners, unchallenged. "i am a maniac, and everyone on the stage is stupid, fat and ugly. and ben , you're a horrible surgeon. now that we've gotten the donald trump portion out of the way..." this morning. he said it was a lot of fun saying he "actually had a little bit more time than usual." because trump wasn't on stage. he also said that in order for the gop party to win...they have to stay united together. new jersey governor chris christie promised iowa voters this morning he will "surprise" people come caucus night. christie hosted a send-off rally at his campaign headquarters in johnston this morning. he says he'll do better in the iowa caucuses than people think because of his campaign efforts. christie says between today and monday he will make stops in every corner of the state 9:16:12 "so when i sit in the chair of the oval office for the first time in january 2017, i won't spin around in the chair and say, 'gee wiz isn't it good i'm president?' it will feel familiar, it will feel like the one i'm in right now. just a little bigger, and a little more important - but it's the same decision- making process." :01-:20 christie held a townhall meeting

he will host three more across the state today here's a look at the other republican candidates sprinkled acorss the state today... rick santorum held a rally in des moines this morning.... and rand paul campaigned in knoxville. ted cruz campaigned in ringsted and fenton... other candidates campaigning in the state are.. john kasich...carly fiorina..jeb bush and ben carson.. as for the democrats... hillary clinton is holding at rally at grand view university in des moines right now. make several stops in eastern iowa today. and martin o'malley will campaign in western iowa local organizations only have a few more days to get ready for the caucuses... the greater des moines partnership is one of many groups that help plan and organize the event. the caucus results will pour into the microsoft media center at capitol square. the goal is to make sure the event goes as smooth as possible. in the weeks before the caucus the partnership's major focus

the public but now the focus shifts to accommodating the national media. and the demand is higher than ever "there's much more media descending on the city. as well as many more campaign staffs. just preparing for all the influx of people. we want to make sure they have all information and resources they need for a successful caucus." more than 2 - thousand members of the media are expected to be in town for the event as caucus night inches closer... a new poll shows how voters are making up their minds on who to for .. it's no surprise those t-v ads help play a major role. according to the latest iowa state university and who-hd iowa caucus poll... 62 percent of voters get their political information from national tv... 49 percent say local tv. however the poll shows that voters use multiple ways to get their information including social media embrace the warm weather this weekend.... next week we could see several

for two men who robbed a metro bank at gunpoint this morning. it happened at central bank in the 4 - thousand block of university around 9.... witnesses say they saw two men wearing hoodies and bandanas on their faces while running from the bank. they say one the suspects had a gun. police say money was stolen... but they are sure how much. investigators are working to get images of the suspects from surveillance video. but they say that could take a while. the texas boy-- known as the affluenza teen-- is back in the united states. ethan couch went before judge in texas today for a fatal drunk driving crash. when couch was 16 he killed four people and was sentenced to ten year probation. currently he is juvenile court... but a february hearing is in place to decide if his case will be transferred to adult court he returned to the u-s yesterday from mexico. the world health organization sayd the zika virus has infected between 3 and 4 million people in brazil.... and the virus

to other parts of the world. tom costello has more... world health experts call it a rapidly exploding crisis, south of the u.s border. ...and a tiny mosquito, carrying the zika virus is thought to be responsible. so far, an estimated 42-hundred babies born in brazil with microcephaly ... abnormally small heads and brains. on thursday, we were with a new mom in brazil as she took her 2-month-old, born with microcephaly, to the doctor. "the level of concern is high, as is the level of uncertainty." with travel advisories now in effect, the uncertainty extends to the u.s, but experts believe the risk of a similar large-scale outbreak here is low. largely because very few americans live in the kind of mosquito breeding grounds we see in brazil....surrounded by trash and stagnate water. "and people typically have air conditioning and good screens that

don't think there's the dense population and the density of mosquitoes and that people um are not really living in the outdoors in in such a great extent." so far, the cdc is aware of 31-cases of zika infection in the u.s. another 19 in puerto rico and one in the us virgin islands. all of the victims contracted the virus while traveling abroad. we don't know how many involve pregnant women. this morning, health departments across the country are under orders to report any suspected zika cases to the cdc. while women who are pregnant or could become pregnant are urged to avoid traveling to zika hot zones. "...it was going to be our last hurrah before um we had the baby in june." gina park and her husband already had their tickets to mexico next month. now, they've canceled. "we just probably couldn't live with ourselves if something ever did happen." more airlines and cruise carriers are offering refunds for pregnant women currently booked for trips to where the zika virus is a health concern. united, delta, american and jetblue have joined other carriers to affected areas in latin america and the carribbean. cruise lines like carnival and royal caribbean are allowing families

they're one of the wall street banks that triggered the financial meltdown -- goldman sachs. just settled with authorities for their part in the crisis that put seven million out of work and millions out of their homes. how does wall street get away with it? millions in campaign contributions and speaking fees. our economy works for wall street because it's rigged by wall street. and that's the problem. as long as washington is bought and paid for, we can't build an economy that works for people.

geiger. the dowdupont merger announced late last year is taking some heat from the senate judiciary committee.. chairman and iowa senator chuck grassley is raising alarms over the proposal to merge by companies dow and dupont pioneer.. he's threatening possible hearings on the anti-trust

move.. saying the judiciary committee has an obligation to review the merger. the merge would create a 95 billion dollar company.. which would split into three separate companies.. all selling as much as a fifth of the worlds pesticides and 40 percent of u-s corn and bean seeds.. grassley says that makes a huge concern because of a potential of reduced competition.. force layoffs.. and the history right here in iowa. "and they better take that into consideration. because they merge, split into three companies. make an agricultural seed company and then want to move all this out of iowa or even move the corporate headquarters out of iowa? no. that stuff should be in iowa." grassley hinted he may be persuading committee members for a call for hearings, adding there are things can be 'embarrassing' for the two firms if they are brought out in public hearings. the cattlemen's beef association

enlist duo herbicide right now.. a circuit court denied its motion.. last fall the e-p-a filed a petition to remove the label.. which has both 2-4-d and glyphosate.. it was developed to help farmers combat weed resistance.. with the denial.. farmers can still use the product.. and retailers can still sell it.. enlist duo is registered in 15 midwestern states.. and was never removed from the market after the e- p-a motion.. however it does still need import approval from china. the e-p-a says it was concerned the combination of chemicals would hurt non-target plants..
